Gorran Primary School, Coleraine

P1/2

Mrs Doey and Mrs Murphy teach P1 and 2.  Mrs Armstrong is the classroom assistant.

P1/2 spend the morning reading, writing and studying all areas of numeracy.

They learn letters through the jolly phonics scheme and begin their reading journey through ‘book bands’ as they learn to read by sounding out, blending and practicing reading cues.

During numeracy we use The Number Puppies to help us recognise and form numbers.  The children develop mathematical skills through practical maths activities using colourful and stimulating resources.

After break the children enjoy outdoor Play Based Learning in their waterproof clothing.  During this time they explore the world, enjoy the beauty of nature and develop essential skills and personal capabilities.

After lunch the children develop skills in a wide range of curricular areas including the arts, the world around us, PDMU, PE and RE.

Our topics are exciting and inspiring.  They follow a two year cycle.

Year 1: Nursery rhymes and seasonal poems, Super space, The arctic, Down on the farm, Mini-beasts and The jungle.

Year 2: All about me, After the storm, What’s in the toy box?, Fabulous food and Helping hands.
